What Motivates Buyers? Experience or Possession?

This quote is, in a general sense, superb, but it’s also instructive when thinking about eBay buyers, sellers and collectors.

People collect for all kinds of reasons – reasons that run a bit deeper than most think. Collectors aren’t hoarders or obsessive compulsives. They collect in order to experience the world. They know the history of their collections, they have countless stories behind each piece. They can tell you where, why and how they purchased the piece – offering telling insights into human nature, retail transactions, negotiating skill, and more.

Just knowing this will help you as an eBay seller. When selling to collectors you need to consider all their dreams, needs and idiosyncrasies. You need to understand what it is they’re after in life. Chances are that it’s not “possession.”
